> Patch note: Potion names and values may change, so this guide focuses on potion roles and usage timing rather than a permanent ranking.

Potions Are Temporary Power

Potions are one of the easiest tools for beginners to underrate. Because they disappear after use, many players save them for a perfect future moment. Then the run dies with full potion slots. A potion that prevents 20 damage, wins an elite, or stabilizes a boss turn has done its job. Temporary power is still power.

The best potion habit is simple: use potions on fights that matter. Elites matter because they give relics. Bosses matter because they end acts. Dangerous hallway fights can also matter if they threaten enough health to ruin your path.

Potion Role Table

Thinking by role is better than memorizing a fixed ranking. A damage potion is amazing when an enemy is about to hit you. It is less important when your deck already has lethal.

The Anti-Hoarding Rule

If using a potion saves more health than you expect to gain from saving it, use it. This rule is not perfect, but it prevents the most common beginner mistake. Potions are supposed to convert into health, relics, and survival.

For example, using a potion to win an elite with 10 less damage taken is often excellent. That saved health may let you upgrade instead of rest later. It may also let you take another elite. A potion can create value far beyond the fight where it is used.

Potions and Elite Timing

Potions make elite fights much safer. Before choosing an elite route, check your potion slots. A good potion can turn a risky elite into a reasonable elite. No potion does not mean you must avoid elites, but it should make you more honest about your deck strength and health.

If you are deciding between a route with an elite and a safer route, potion quality can be the tiebreaker. The Act 1 pathing checklist explains how to combine potions with map planning.

Buying Potions

Buying potions can be correct, especially before a dangerous elite or boss. Beginners sometimes avoid potion purchases because they want permanent upgrades. But a potion that wins the next elite can effectively buy a relic by making that elite safe.

Do not buy potions randomly. Buy them with a target fight in mind. If the next boss requires burst damage, buy damage. If the deck dies to large turns, buy block or mitigation. If your deck has powerful cards but struggles to find them, buy draw.

Empty Potion Slots Are Also a Cost

If your potion slots are full, future potions may be wasted. This is another reason to use potions proactively. Holding weak potions forever can prevent you from finding stronger ones. Sometimes using a mediocre potion in a decent spot is better than carrying it through half the run.

This does not mean you should throw potions away. It means you should recognize when a potion slot itself has value.

Common Beginner Mistakes

The first mistake is saving potions until the run is already lost. The second is using a potion after the dangerous turn has passed. The third is buying a potion without knowing which fight it is for. The fourth is ignoring potion slots when choosing elite routes.

A good potion decision usually has a sentence behind it: "This potion lets me take this elite," or "This potion lets me upgrade instead of rest," or "This potion covers the boss turn my deck cannot block."

FAQ

When should beginners use potions?

Use a potion when it prevents major health loss, wins an elite, saves a run-ending turn, or improves an important boss fight.

Is it bad to use potions in hallway fights?

Not always. If a potion saves a large amount of health or protects an important route, using it in a hallway fight can be correct.

Should I buy potions in shops?

Buy a potion when the next elite or boss is dangerous and the potion solves that fight better than another purchase would.
